Martins Family Heritage

Welcome to the Martins Family Heritage, a website dedicated to the history of the Martins family and a place for the entire family to connect.

One of the great things about the Martin family roots is how well it was documented. The book about the family was created back in the mid-80's, by Ethel Louis Beshore, and forms the basis of our family story that goes back to 1816 (over 200 years!).

We have created this website and a digital version of the family history book so that more can be collected and added to the book. The website will be a new gateway into ancestry learnings and much more.

Explore the site and enjoy!

Martins Family Heritage

"Stories of a family of immigrants who set sail from Maderia Island, Portugal to settle in the Hawaiian Islands. A family devout in their religion, full of integrity, devotion, high moral character, and beauty. Best of all, a family full of love.

This information has taken 10 years to gather, small bits at a time. I had no desire to make this just a lot of statistics, yet it is difficult to write about things I have no knowledge of. My gratitude to all who cared enough to contribute. The stories are done in such a way that they may be added to easily.

Please note that I do not claim to be a great writer, I'm only a member of this great big wonderful family who thought these stories were worth preserving for our children and the forthcoming generations."

- Ethel Louis Beshore (circa 1986)

Joao Martin

As a boy, Joao loved sports - especially the competitive types, and he loved horses and was a good rider in competition. He was a boy of vivacious spirit and quite a prankster. Joao Martin fell in love with Jesuina Caldeira and promised to come back home to marry her after his tour of duty in the Portuguese Army. He was twenty years old when he joined the Army, and served as a Petty Officer.

Jesuina Martin

Jesuina Caldeira was a lovely girl with milk-white skin and dark brown sparkling eyes. Her beautiful eyes were undoubtedly her most outstanding feature, framed with rich, thick, long lashes. On October 25, 1882, Joao Martin, Jr., married Jesuina Thereza de Jesus Caldeira in the Catholic Church of Good Jesus in Ponta Delgada, Diocese of Funchal.
